More weatherization funds headed to Utah

As part of a big push to tout the successes of the Recovery Act, the White House announced Friday that Utah has met the requirements to gain access to $19 million in weatherization money.

"What we see here today is that states like Utah are moving forward aggressively with the weatherization program, delivering energy and cost savings for the families who need it most," said Cathy Zoi, an assistant secretary at the Energy Department.

Under the Recovery Act, states were given half of their allotment. If they hit certain reporting benchmarks, such as weatherizing more than 30 percent of their targeted hopes, the Energy Department would release the second half of the funds.

So far, Utah has weatherized slightly more than 1,400 homes, hitting the mark.

In all, Utah will receive $37.8 million to make the homes of low-income residents more energy efficient. The Salt Lake Tribune
