Who had health insurance coverage pre-2014?

Recent tax filers undoubtedly noticed something new on their 2014 federal tax form. For the first time, the “shared responsibility” provision of the Affordable Care Act required individuals to have qualifying health coverage, qualify for a coverage exemption, or make a shared responsibility payment when filing tax returns. The U.S. Census Bureau’s recently released health insurance (2008-2013) estimates provide a baseline of health insurance coverage before the Affordable Care Act individual shared responsibility requirements. In future years, the effects of the Affordable Care Act will be apparent in this data series.

This data is based on modeled American Community Survey estimates and administrative data. It allows analysis of differences in coverage by demographics at the county level. In addition to statewide data, the following visualization provides an interactive method to view coverage at the county level.

Keep in mind that government-provided healthcare coverage (such as Medicaid) is included. What do these figures tell us about health insurance coverage for Utahns under the age of 65 prior to 2014?

• Roughly 15 percent of Utah’s population under age 65 did not have health insurance between 2008 and 2013.

• Utah women were slightly less likely (84 percent) than Utah men (86 percent) to maintain healthcare coverage.

• Young people under the age of 19 were most likely to be covered by health insurance. More than 90 percent had coverage.

• Of the reported racial/ethnic groups, Hispanics showed the highest rates of healthcare coverage.

• In Utah, the lower incomes translated into lower shares of insured individuals.

• In general, Utah counties in the southern half of the state showed the highest shares of uninsured.

• Piute County’s estimate indicates that one-fourth of its population did not maintain healthcare coverage, the highest uninsured rate in Utah.

• Morgan County showed the highest percentage of insured individuals (90 percent).

Monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) updated

The Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) program produces monthly data on changes in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services.

There is no CPI data specific to Utah, so national data is relied upon for this page.

2011-2013 American Community Survey Statistics

The U.S. Census Bureau released the second of its annual series of data sets from the American Community Survey, this one combining the three years of data collected between 2011 and 2013.

The statistics paint a detailed portrait of the nation, all states, and the District of Columbia, all congressional districts and all other geographic areas with populations of 20,000 or more. For each covered area, the American Community Survey includes statistics on more than 40 economic, housing and social topics.

By pooling three years of survey responses, the Census Bureau is able to produce more reliable statistics for more areas of the country than is possible with data compiled from one year of data collection.

The American Community Survey provides a wide range of important statistics about all communities in the country. The American Community Survey gives communities the current information they need to plan investments and services. Retailers, homebuilders, police departments, and town and city planners are among the many private- and public-sector decision makers who count on these annual results.

Employment by Major Industry

Employment by Major Industry (or Nonfarm Employment) is compiled payroll data for nonfarm workers. Nonfarm workers are all employees excluding government employees, private household employees, employees of nonprofit organizations and farm employees. DWS economists have broken these documents into county regions and are an important economic indicator of the current economic situation. For more: Why no "Farm" in Nonfarm Jobs?

The latest Unemployment Insurance (UI) Weekly Claims Report is now available from the US Department of Labor. The four-week moving average of nationwide initial claims was 298,500, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average.

The report reflects unemployment numbers for week-ending 26 September 2014.  During this week, 1,137 initial claims were filed in Utah compared to 1,250 the prior week. The numbers listed below are based on the four-week moving average.

• 1,184 initial UI claims filed (decrease of 8 from the prior week and decrease of 343 from same week in 2013).
• 10,056 continued UI weeks claimed (decrease of 229 from the prior week and decrease of 2,792 from same week in 2013).
• 0 continued Extended Unemployment Compensation (EUC08) weeks claimed (no change from the prior week and decrease of 2,650 from the same week in 2013).

The report reflects unemployment numbers for week-ending 20 September 2014.  During this week, 1,250 initial claims were filed in Utah compared to 1,141 the prior week. The numbers listed below are based on the four-week moving average.

• 1,192 initial UI claims filed (decrease of 35 from the prior week and decrease of 364 from same week in 2013).
• 10,305 continued UI weeks claimed (decrease of 249 from the prior week and decrease of 2,695 from same week in 2013).

The report reflects unemployment numbers for week-ending 13 September 2014.  During this week, 1,250 initial claims were filed in Utah compared to 1,141 the prior week. The numbers listed below are based on the four-week moving average.

• 1,227 initial UI claims filed (decrease of 5 from the prior week and decrease of 274 from same week in 2013).
• 10,607 continued UI weeks claimed (decrease of 303 from the prior week and decrease of 2,620 from same week in 2013).
• 0 continued Extended Unemployment Compensation (EUC08) weeks claimed (no change from the prior week and decrease of 2,666 from the same week in 2013).

The Council for Community and Economic Research supplies comparative data for urban areas on a quarterly basis, and areas surveyed include those where organizations have volunteered to participate.

• 1,295 initial UI claims filed (decrease of 27 from the prior week and decrease of 223 from same week in 2013).
• 10,870 continued UI weeks claimed (decrease of 212 from the prior week and decrease of 2,454 from same week in 2013).
• 0 continued Extended Unemployment Compensation (EUC08) weeks claimed (no change from the prior week and decrease of 2,731 from the same week in 2013).

Long-Term Employment Projections

The long-term employment projections have been updated for the time period of 2012 to 2022. Projections are produced for the state of Utah as well as for eight sub-state areas. The areas are determined by population and job density and are not created equal. But rather, types of jobs are determined by the nature of the local area’s economy. Short-term projections for 2012 to 2014 are also provided for statewide.

The value in providing these projections is to help identify which types of jobs are most likely to be in high demand in the future. Ultimately, the long-term employment projections act as a forecasting measure by which individuals as well as organizations and agencies can plan ahead.
