The lull in Utah bankruptcies that began in 2005 when a new law made it harder for consumers to declare themselves insolvent appears about over.
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Utah reported that 8,942 Utahns sought relief from their debts during the first six months of 2010, a 31 percent increase compared with the same period a year earlier, when the court received 6,817 petitions for debt relief.
Nationwide, bankruptcy filings increased 14 percent during the first six months of this year, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute, a nonprofit Virginia-based organization that studies issues related to insolvencies. The Salt Lake Tribune
