The U.S. Census Bureau as been releasing 2010 Census data state by state. Data geeks in Utah could rejoice because Utah's data was released in the first wave. But, now results for all 50 states (and the District of Columbia) are available, so it's time to do a little comparing. The Census Bureau has just released a Census Brief that does just that.
What do we learn about Utah, her counties, and her metropolitan areas?
- Between 2000 and 2010, Utah showed the third fastest growing population in the nation (24 percent). And, it was surrounded by other fast-growers--Nevada (fastest), Arizona (second), and Idaho (fourth). Incidentally, Nevada has been the fastest growing state for five straight decades.
- Two of Utah's Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) ranked among the fastest-growing in the country. The St. George MSA--Washington County--ranked as the second and the Provo-Orem MSA--Utah and Juab counties--ranked sixth.
- Despite rapid growth in both Washington and Utah counties, neither made the list of fastest-growing counties (with populations of 10,000 or more).
- You may have noticed there is still a lot of open space in Utah. Only three counties--Salt Lake, Davis and Weber--showed 2010 population densities of 300 persons or more per square mile.
- Five of Utah's counties--Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, and Washington--added 40,000 or more residents to their populations between 2000 and 2010.
