Census: Utah population is aging

The median age in Utah shot up over the past decade as birthrates dropped. And the recession pushed more residents to rent instead of buy homes, and to combine into comparatively large households to save money, according to 2010 census data released Thursday.

Also, data show some Utah cities are far “younger” than others. For example, two of every three people in Hildale — the polygamous town on the Arizona border — are under age 18. Meanwhile in Scofield, one of every three residents (only 24 remain in the old Carbon County mining town) are senior citizens older than age 65. Salt Lake Tribune
