Multiple Job Holding

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released multiple-job holding rates by state. The multiple job-holding rate represents the percent of workers with two or more jobs. The data comes from the Current Population Survey--the survey used to determine national unemployment rates. Utah's multiple job holding rate measured 6.5 percent in 2010--higher than the national average of 4.9 percent. However, Utah's rate is down from 7.6 percent in 2009. In fact, Utah showed one of the largest state declines in multiple job-holding between 2009 and 2010. Interestingly, multiple job-holding nationwide has shown a slow decline in recent years nationwide.

States with the highest share of multiple job holding are almost exclusively clumped together in the northern and middle parts of the U.S. South Dakota showed the highest level of multiple job-holding at 10.3 percent. On the other end of the scale, Alabama showed the lowest level of multiple job-holding--only 3.3 percent.
