State report on health care costs anticipates reforms

Young adults and those of all ages who are generally healthy tend not to set aside money for medical costs, according to a Utah Department of Health Health Data Committee report looking at the difference between medical claims for Utahns. The report found that in 2009, about 9 percent of health care dollars in Utah were spent on healthy people, with slightly more than 5 percent going to care for healthy children. It said that healthy males make up 21 percent of Utah residents, while healthy females comprise 18 percent. Among those with insurance, health care cost an average of $385 a year, while those deemed less healthy cost an average of $2,768. Deseret News
